We looking forward to this Saturday, January 10!
This year, it’s Malvern Prep vs. Conestoga High School, 5-on-5, for the second (is this becoming annual?!) Clayward Cup Bowl-Off.
We previewed the friendly competition right before winter break, when Mr. John Matthews – Ceramics teacher at Conestoga (and perhaps the most interesting man in the Greater Philadelphia area) brought several of his student potters to help in the studio. Tips, tricks, clay, stories, and pizza were shared between the two schools. This is what our studio looked like on that day. So much talent at the wheel in one studio!
Saturday’s competition begins at 11 AM. The teams are making bowls to the criteria of quantity, quality, and suitability for soup at Empty Bowls. It’s a final big push for us towards the January 19th event, and we can’t wait.
We’re especially excited to welcome our judge, Jennifer Martin. Here’s some of her work. Our potters met her at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show this year, and loved her pieces – she definitely inspired a few of them to create pieces inspired by her style. In addition to working as a ceramic artist, Jennifer is Vice President at The Clay Studio, one of the most active and community-engaged ceramic art centers in the country. We’re looking forward to learning from her.
All are welcome to drop in, cheer the teams on, glaze a few bowls, or preview the pieces in the gallery.
We’re in the homestretch to Empty Bowls 2015. With supporting events like this, the energy is staying high!
